DC the new 52 - initial thoughts - Part 1

I haven't been this excited about comics since I made my comic con pilgrimage out to New York in 2007. The DC relaunch has been all over every comic website and blog worth its salt since the original announcement. It has been interesting to get different people's take on it. Who thinks it is a good idea? Who doesn't? Who is going to stop buying DC comics because of it. Who is going to buy more DC comics? Which new comics will do the best? Will there be any surprises?

Well I am currently making my way through them, with the intention of reading all 52. So far, my thoughts are as set out below.

Firstly some high level thoughts:

There has been much talk of the hooded woman. Who is she and why is she in every single issue so far? Is she the same woman that appears at the end of Flashpoint #5?

Are these different titles all set within different universes? It is difficult to believe that Bruce Wayne operates with 3 different Robins (as suggested in Batman & Robin) and yet never met Green Lantern or Superman (as in Justice League)? In Green Lantern Hal has lost his ring just as it finished off in Old DCU. That is not the case in JL. So maybe they are the same universes but different points in each or they are one of 52 universes.

Clearly in some titles it picks up right where we left off in old DCU. Others have complete new timelines or backgrounds. Ollie in Green Arrow is nothing like the one we know.

Liked and will buy #2
Action Comics (undecided on this)
Justice League
Animal man
Batgirl
Batwing
Detective comics
Swamp thing
Batman & Robin
Bat woman

Justice League of course was the big gun straight out of the starting block. There was much excitement on this title for so many reasons. It was the first of the new ones. It picked up after the finale of Flashpoint (in theory). It has Lee and Johns (dream teams don't come much bigger than this) on art and story duties. It was starting at a point that pre-empted much that we already knew. It was to be the driving force of the new 52. It was to be the flagship title, bringing all the big names together.

Well, I think it was a cool first issue. I loved the art and the fact that Batman was prominent in it. The script was sharp and there were a few funnies. The last page was interesting (even from someone who is not a Superman fan).

They did say they were starting at the beginning and sure enough, these guys who we have seen together a hundred times are not close allies (as of yet). Hal appears to be a bit of a maverick, maybe even a bit of a tool. Needless to say, they have set it up for a lot of JL shenanigans. I must admit however that I can't help but contrast this initial JL to that of the All Star Batman JL that Lee and Miller constructed. Albeit very different but for example, Wonder Woman in All Star is the kind of hardcore superpower you want.

Batman family

I've always enjoyed Tony Daniels work, whether just drawing or writing too. There is no doubt that he gets Batman and I think likes the darker side to him. His art on RIP is some of the best you can get your hands on. He's up there with Lee in my opinion. The first double page splash of Detective Comics has Batman running across a Gotham skyline. An image we have probably seen a million times, but yet here you can't help but drool.

There are slight nods to Dark Knight Returns I think. I don't know if they are deliberate or just happen but either way I love the darkness. So Bruce is back in the cowl. This is evidently a different Batman to the one we see in Justice League or certainly much further on in his career. He is up against the Joker and is suggestive that this isn't the first time. The Joker doesn't seem to have changed. Still white faced and mental. Spoilers ahead - he seems to deliberately get himself into Arkham and meets with the Dollmaker. I think this is a new Batman villain and from the final page (below) you have to say, looks like we are in for a treat. This is Batman comics at it's best.

Updates

Pretty exciting times in comics at the moment. The DC New 52 seem to be doing pretty well and everyone is getting pretty excited. So far I have only read Justice League #1 and I thought it was very good. I am deliberately trying to not read about this weeks comics as I don't want to know too much before I read them - hopefully this weekend I'll be able to get through them - pretty excited! Once I've done that I'll get my thoughts down on the blog.

In other news, I got my copies of Turf signed by both Jonathan Ross and Tommy Lee Edwards. That was cool.

Also saw Batman Live at the O2 which was pretty spectacular - impressive show!

Marvel are not letting DC run away with the headlines, and are still pumping out Fear Itself tie-ins, constant X-men stuff (which I seem to miss) and of course the new Ultimate universe stuff - Hawkeye, Ultimates and Spider-man (which I think kicks off next week). Ultimates was ok, nothing spectacular. Hawk eye was quite cool. I probably won't read the Spider-man stuff.

Oh and I am looking forward to this:

Steve Jobs moves on

I just can’t contain myself on this!

I’ve been reading the various blogs, websites and forums this morning, all dedicating themselves to the fact that Steve jobs is stepping down. In many instances I’ve almost had to wipe the tears off the screen as Apple-ists try and gasp for air as the shock sets in as their hero decides to move on and ride into the sunset.

Of course, with this news, the stories take 3 routes – factual i.e. another selection of words to explain that Jobs has resigned. Future – what will now happen to the company? Past – how Steve Jobs saved the company and turned it into one of the most profitable companies in the world.

Well I have some thoughts of my own. Firstly, like anything in this day and age (and technology is no exception) there are cycles (or maybe circles as Google likes to call them). Nothing lasts forever. Microsoft had their day (20 plus years of leading the way) and regardless of what you think of Bill Gates, his company shaped technology, business, entertainment, gadgets etc. It doesn’t matter whether you like the company or agree with what they did or like their software or their mobile OS – they shaped technology. Simple.

But it wasn’t going to last forever. And so, a company named Apple (that Microsoft financially invested in) did two very clever things (aside from getting Jobs back in – via his then company) – they saw the future of mobile music. Where Microsoft continued down the OS route, Apple created the iPod. And they created iTunes. One piece of hardware and one piece of software changed the game – especially when they made them available to Windows users. The point is, without Microsoft, Apple wouldn’t be where it is today.

Looking at Apple now, they saw the benefit of mobile – the iPhone and the iPad. Game changers. Again, it doesn’t matter if you prefer Android (the fastest selling smartphones), are a PC user through and through, really dislike Jobs and his sneakers or love flash, Apple in the last 10 years have shaped technology. Simple.

And as for the cycles, well Apple probably won’t be as cool or future proof with Jobs moving role – in the next few years (after the next iPhone and iPad), it will be someone else’s turn. My money is on Google, although Facebook clearly fancy a go!

The Master List

Everybody loves a list. Especially a list of comics. Well, below is the Master List. It is my current standing order with my local comic shop - Gosh! Which have moved to Soho in case you didn't know. Nice new premises.

So time to review everything I am currently buying. There are 52 new DC titles coming in September, so that sorts DC. For the first month I can't help myself, I'm buying all 52. After that I will probably collect around 20 titles and then move from there.

Thankfully a slightly quieter week. I'm probably about a month behind with a huge pile to get through so the more quieter weeks the better. I'd love to get up to speed before Flashpoint comes to a head and DC New 52 starts.

Comic Con has been and gone and again lots of news coming out of that - Marvel concentrated on movie news with Captain America and art and teasers for The Avengers. DC continued with their new line ups.

We now have a black Ultimate spider-man. It will be interesting to see where that goes. More Batman stills too coming out - is Bane going to break Batman? Oh and the new Spider-man movie too.

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon have updated their iPad app and it is a nice fresh way to enjoy sections of the Internet that you probably otherwise would not see. Pick your areas of interest and simply swipe and you will be presented with lots and lots of websites and pages that cover topics you care about but never knew existed. One of my favourite sites I have discovered is 500px, which is an excellent photography site, where users upload some stunning pictures. The site looks great on the iPad too.

As to futuristic pics, found this one randomly through StumbleUpon.

Flashpoint kicks Fear Itself in the stones

So firstly, Fear Itself from Marvel. We are 3/4 issues in (I can't even remember) and I have to say, it is a load of gash (4 issues). Prior to its release I was quite looking forward to it. Marvel normally do the epic universe story quite well (see Siege and Secret Invasion). Fear Itself is not one of them. It doesn't feel fresh or exciting. I'm struggling to feel that I even care. Of course I will read it to the end, but I won't be getting involved in any of the tie-ins.

Flashpoint on the other hand has so far been awesome. I would recommend that you read this (even if you don't normally partake in comics). The great thing about Flashpoint is that it has taken the whole DC Universe and turned it on its head. The main title has a twist in each issue that just makes you smile - especially the last page of the first issue.

What is also great about Flashpoint is that the tie-ins have also been for the most part excellent. Spoilers ahead (Selina Kyle is Oracle, crippled, Hal Jordan does not get the ring from Abin Sur when he crash lands, Jason Todd is a priest, Guy Gardner owns a pub and James Gordon knows the identity of Batman). Nice little touches as the stories span the whole DC Universe. On top of all this, we know that a big change is coming with the new 52 #1's. So far DC seem to be really getting it right. Again if you are going to buy any tie-in, you must read the Batman one. Really excellent. Wait to you see the last page of issue 2. Quality!

Which Titles to read in the New DCU?

The news from DC a few weeks back that they were relaunching all their titles is still causing much chat and debate online and offline about whether such a bold move is a good one and whether it will not only add new readers to their loyal following but keep existing fans happy. It is a lot of work to go through this process, regardless of the industry. They aren't using the word "reboot" but it is pretty damn close to one.

For existing fans like myself, my favourite comic characters are DC. Always have been. I do read Marvel titles (maybe more now than I ever did) but there are stronger links with DC. My core reading revolves around Batman. That has always been the case. I have had two stints of 'proper' comic collecting in my life and both have been Batman-centric. Unless DC radically change Batman for the worse, I can't see this ever changing.

So, with the new titles coming in, I have to decide which ones I'm going to read and collect. There are a number of facets to making this decision. Bearing in mind the titles are all starting at #1 there will be some collectors who buy all 52. It is not often you can buy a Batman #1 or Detective Comics #1 nowadays for a couple of quid. And what about in 3/4 years time when Detective Comics #27 comes out.

So on the basis that I am buying these simply as number one's the plan is as set out below. I will review after the initial issue of each.

Action Comics #1. Grant Morrison and Rags Morales. I love most of GM's stuff, especially the Batman runs. Admittedly I've been less enthralled on the recent stuff (The Return of Bruce Wayne) and I didn't partucalry like All Star Superman (I know I must be the only one), but I definitely won't be missing this.

Superman #1. Curiosity more than anything else.

Superboy #1. I'll check the art on this. The premise sounds quite cool - clone/experiment.

Batman. There are 11 titles that fall within the Batman family. I'll buy them all in the first instance. Obviously Batman and Detective Comics are the big ones. They have both got to nail it and I hope they do. With Synder, Capullo and Tony Daniel I think they are in good hands.

I'm less concerned about Batwing and Red Hood and the Outlaws but feel they deserve a first look. Batman and Robin looks like it could be pretty sweet also especially with Tomasi and Gleason on board. The Bruce, Damian relationship could be an interesting one.

Green Lantern. There are 4 titles that fall within the GL world and again I'll definitely start with the 4. Green Lantern #1 looks to set up a new green lantern so that will be interesting and does have Geoff Johns on writing duties.

Justice League #1. Well Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. What else do you need to convince you? This could actually be pretty cool.

The Flash #1. Francis Manapul really gets Barry and is writing as well as drawing, so I am hoping this will be awesome.

Green Arrow #1. Written by JT Krul, who probably knows this character better than most and has started Ollie over a few times. If he is depicted as the hard nosed vigilante who doesn't give a flying firetruck then this could be a good opportunity to headline Green Arrow as a leading DC entity. Also with Jurgens and Perez on art, this could be a winner.

The remaining titles fall into three distinct categories, The Dark, The Edge and Young Justice. These I am less concerned about and will probably pick and chose as they come out and on the basis of the teams and the art (and how I'm feeling on the day). On the basis of what we know thus far, I'm thinking Animal Man, Voodoo and Deathstroke. This may change but Animal Man has always been one of those odd DC characters I have enjoyed as is Deathstroke, who looks like he is properly tooled up and looking for trouble. Voodoo looks like a good premise and could be something a little different.

Final possibility is Suicide Squad, only because Harley Quinn is in it and she became an interesting character in Gotham City Sirens, so that could be a bit of dark humour.

So that is about 25 out of the possible 52. Not too bad!

Post Flash notes - Batman

Via BleedingCool, IGN, CBR and of course DCs own The Source blog, a lot of information is coming out on the relaunch of the DC Universe. With 52 new first issues I am unlikely to buy them all as they are phased out to stores, but a lot of the stuff looks pretty good.

Big changes are afoot and for me one of the biggest is the fact that Barbara Gordon is again to become Batgirl. Are they just going to ignore Killing Joke where she was paralysed by the Joker? Or in this 'alternative' universe (if that is what it will be or become) did the Joker never shot her? I suspect that Thomas Wayne will kill this version of the Joker. Thus, Barbara will never be paralysed.

Anyway, on the new Batman titles, it looks as if Bruce will be the only Batman. Dick will be reprising his role as NightWing (I think).

Batman #1 is written by current Detective Comics writer Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo.

Detective Comics #1 is written and drawn by Batman writer/artist Tony Daniel.

Batman And Robin #1 is written by Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason, with Damian as Robin.

And Batman: The Dark Knight #1 will be by David Finch. Not sure if this will continue the story he has already started.

Batman Inc. I think is coming back next year.
