Action Comics #1

$1million. The most expensive comic ever sold. Exciting. The names of the seller and buyer were not disclosed, though I suspect that we will get more info in due course. The previous record for the most expensive comic - another, not so well maintained copy of Action #1, which sold last year for $317,000. Apparently there are about 100 copies of the issue in existence. One day...oh yes...one day...you will be mine.

Return of Bruce Wayne

Well it was only a matter of time. He has been gone since the end of Crisis and I must admit I expected it to be a lot longer before he returned. What will happen to the cowl? Will he take it back? Will Dick continue in his role? Grant Morrison is on board so it has gotta be good. Some pics:

Green Hornet

Kevin Smith has had a bit of a love affair with this character and now we are going to see his blood sweat and tears come in the form of a comic. He was originally attempting to put together the script for a movie version, which never happened. I expect that a lot of those ideas are now in the comic. It looks cool, with Alex Ross covers. More to come.

Brightest Day

The event after Blackest Night. I love the cover, but I hope there aren't so many tie ins as there were in Blackest Night, because I am lost. The art does look cool though - it appears that the main character will be Arthur Curry.

2010 Movies

Some films to watch out for:

44 Inch Chest

The A-Team - June 11th

Alice in Wonderland

The Book of Eli
Opens: January 15th 2010 (missed this now)

Centurion

Clash of the Titans
Opens: March 26th 2010

Daybreakers
Opens: January 8th 2010

The Descent: Part II

The Expendables
Opens: August 13th 2010

The Green Hornet

Iron Man 2

Jonah Hex

The Karate Kid

Flash: Rebirth part 6

Finally.

It was early last year when this first hit shelves. Originally a 5 parter, now a 6 parter and the last issue out 'after' the Blackest Night tie in. Not great timing. But it has been pretty cool, so I'll let DC off on this occasion.

Promotions at DC

So some key changes at DC

Jim Lee and Dan DiDio will be Co-Publishers of DC Comics.
Geoff Johns will be Chief Creative Officer.
John Rood will be EVP, Sales, Marketing and Business Development.
Patrick Caldon will be EVP, Finance and Administration.

What will this mean for the future of DC? Jim and Geoff are two of my favourite people in the comics industry - does this mean we will see less of them? I hope not.

However, well done guys.

Batman 3 rumours

ComicVine reported on some Batman 3 movie rumours. Arkham Asylum is being banded about as a possible venue and the Riddler may well be the main villain. I think whatever they do, it is going to be incredibly difficult to follow the previous two movies.

Kick Ass

There are a lot of clips and teasers kicking around online of the upcoming Kick Ass movie. I have to say it looks like a lot of fun. A lot of action, much blood, a hell of a lot of swearing and what looks like a lot of comedy. I haven't read the original comic run but will definitely be getting it in trade before watching the movie. Mark Millar has always been a favourite of mine, so I hope the film does well.

Mr Millar has also been commented on for his thoughts on the Superman franchise (again). I would definitely be keen to see what he would come up with but I am not convinced on a whole re=telling again - right from the beginning. We know what happens - we know the origin story. What we need is a bad-ass superman story where we see him up against similarly powerful characters in a predominantly human world.

Spider Man Reboot

Some info coming in on this now. Apparently there is the high possibility that it might be based on the Ultimate Spider-man universe. Not sure what I think about this - I really like some of the Ultimate stuff, but have avoided the spidey stuff as I wasn't enamored with the art. Maybe the next time I am shopping, I will check it out again - give it a chance.

Turf

In April Jonathan Ross and Tommy Lee Edwards will release 'Turf' as a four part comic, through Image. I have read a little about it now and have to say I am looking forward to it. Ross has grown on me over the years as a TV personality, but he is a fellow comic lover - and geek - I think (and hope) he would take that as a compliment. Anyway, Turf is set in prohibition-era America and is a gangster/mafia style story. However, vampires turn up to cause problems. I like the sound of it amd will definitely be purchasing a copy.

Dead Avenger?

Holy Cr*p

An Avenger dies in Siege 2? Who? No don't tell me. I'll find out soon enough - it is out tomorrow.

2010 OSCAR NOMINATIONS

It is interesting this year. I have seen very few of the films that are up for an Oscar. Avatar and The Hurt Locker are both up for nine nominations each. Inglourious Basterds has eight. Of those three I have only seen Avatar. I guess I should make a point of seeing the other two!

Of the categories that interest me, we have:

Best Actor:

Morgan Freeman – "Invictus" (haven't seen but want to)
Jeff bridges – "Crazy Heart" (haven't seen and don't know much about it)
George Clooney – "Up in the Air" (quite keen to see, although heard mixed views)
Colin Firth – "A Single Man" (quite keen to see)
Jeremy Renner – "The Hurt Locker" (keen)

Best Picture:

“Avatar” James Cameron and Jon Landau, Producers
“The Blind Side” Nominees to be determined
“District 9” Peter Jackson and Carolynne Cunningham, Producers
“An Education” Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey, Producers
“The Hurt Locker” Nominees to be determined
“Inglourious Basterds” Lawrence Bender, Producer
“Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” Lee Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness, Producers
“A Serious Man” Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, Producers
“Up” Jonas Rivera, Producer
“Up in the Air” Daniel Dubiecki, Ivan Reitman and Jason Reitman, Producers

What do you think? Which film should win?

More comment to follow.

Awesome trailers

Clash of the Titans
Iron Man 2
Wolf Man
Kick Ass
Legion

There should be a 'Best Trailer' Category at the Oscars.

New York Trip YAY!!!!

End of Feb - we are going to New York (my wife and I). Well excited. Have given some thought to the different things we could do in our five days in the city that never sleeps.

Here is a little taster:

Columbus Avenue Market - leafing through old comic books - sweet!
Movieoke - re-enact favourite movie scenes!
Visit Yoda in Queens - Museum of Moving Image
Mintons Jazz House - Miles dubbed it as the Black Jazz Capital of the World!
Met Museum - cocktails on the Roof Garden - Sweet!

Plenty more to follow :-)

Revenge of the Fallen.

So Revenge of the Fallen. Wanted to see this at the cinema when it came out, but never got round to it. So Saturday night, watched it on DVD. It was one of those films where I could not stop saying ‘cool’ under my breath repeatedly. This of course was due to the fact that the effects for the most part are awesome. Really awesome. Story…not so much. Acting…ok. Dialogue…couldn’t hear it. Action and effects…awesome. Slow-mo robot fighting! What more do you want? No really…what more do you want? Yep I was a kid again watching this…well I kinda am a kid most of the time anyway but this enhanced that. One of the things that I now want to do (and this is the geek in me) – I want to go through both Transformer films and see which Transformers appeared in the original Hasbro cartoon. There were definitely a lot of additions. Very cool film though.
